Cellular Jail National Memorial
Cellular Jail National Memorial located at Port Blair has been built to
penalize Indian Freedom fighters, who were incarcerated in this Jail. It
acquired its name "Cellular" because it is entirely made up of individual
cells for the solitary confinement of the prisoners. The Jail, now a place
of pilgrimage for all freedom loving people, has been declared a National
Memorial.
Ross Island
No less eerie are the decaying colonial remains on Ross Island,
at the entrance to Port Blair harbour, where the British sited their first
penal settlement in the Andamans. Ross witnessed some of the most brutal
excesses of British colonial history, and was he source of the prison's
infamy as Kalapani, or Black Water.
Viper Island
First stop on the harbour cruise from Port Blair is generally Viper
Island. Lying a short way off Haddo Wharf, it served as a isolation
zone for the main prison, where escapees and convicts (including hunger
strikers) were sent to be punished. It has a gallows atop a hillock, where
condemned prisoners were hanged.
