Delhi being the capital city has the most diverse population and enjoys a large variety of religious celebrations with traditional music, dance and colorful costumes. Apart from the religious festivals several other colorful occassions also bring together the top perfomers from the field of music, dance, drama and art.
With the break of the new year in the month of January, the festivity in Delhi starts and gathers momentum through the year.
New Year's Day
The festivity in the city starts with the first day of the Christian calendar. The shops and the markets are decorated and they display a veriety of gift items. It is the time for partying and having fun. Special programs are held, buffets spreads, dance and jam sessions are organised in many of the city's hotels and cafeterias.
Lohri
In the month of January when the east celebrates Makar Sankranti and the south celebrates Pongal, it is Lohri that is celebrated over here in Delhi and some parts of north India. It marks a overwhelming harvest for the farmers and is celebrated with bonfires, sweets, music and dance.
Republic Day Celebrations
Every year since 1950, January 26 is celebrated through out the country as th Republic Day and Delhi being the capital is at the heart of the celebrations. The artiliary and other military equipments are paraded across rajpath. Cultural dance & music groups from all over the nation perform their art parading through the rajpath. School students from in and around Delhi dressed in colorful costumes parade across rajpath. This is one of the major attractions of Delhi and it brings thousands of poeple from all over the country and international guests as well.
Martyr's Day
January 30, is celebrated as the Martyr's Day to pay homage to the Father of the nation, Mahatma Gandhi and all those who lost their lives in the struggle for freedom. This day is marked with prayers and songs in Raj Ghat and a guard of honour to the freedom fighters.
Delhi Rose Festival
This festival of roses takes place during the end of January. Roses from all around the globe are displayed at the Safdur Jung Tomb. It attracts a large number of tourists from distant lands.
Basant Panchami
It marks the begining of the season of flowers and the Moghul gardens behind the Rastrapati Bhawan are openned to the tourists.
The Delhi Flower Show
It takes place in the premises of the Delhi Old Fort or Purana Quila. Horticulturists from all around the globe come here to participate and exhibit their unique collections of flowers and hybrid varieties.
Id-Ul-Fitr
This marks the end of the Ramjaan fast and is celebrated with feasts and prayers. Thousands gather for prayers in the Jama
Masjid.
Holi
The festival of colors is celebrated with great enthusiasm. People from all walks of life celebrate the coming of spring by drinking bhang, a mildmilk beverage laced with marijuana. Smearing each other with powdered colours, red especially, and spraying coloured water at each other. This is a festival which breaks the barriers between the poor and rich between people of different castes and languages.
Amir Khusru
Prayers are held and qawallis are sung to celebrate the birth anniversery of the famous musician Amir
Khusru.
Id-Ur-Zuhr
This occassion recalls the sacrifice of Ibrahim's son and is marked with animal sacrifice. Prayers are held in the city mosques and people feast on meat and sweets.
National Drama Festival
Different theatre, music and dance group gather in the city to perform and exchange their views at Rabindra Bhawan.
Buddha Jayanti
The birth of Lord Buddha is celebrated with prayers held in Ladakh Buddha Vihara, Ring road and Buddha Vihara next to Lakshmi Narayan Temple Mandir

International Mango Festival
This exciting festival of mangoes takes place during the summers. Hundreds of different vareities of mangoes from all around the world are displayed in this show and viewers are allowed free tasting. This show is generally held in the Talkatora Stadium, New Delhi.
Crafts Mela
Just after the monsoons the craftsmen from all over the country gather in Suraj Kund, close to Delhi to display their handicrafts and fabric items. This occassion attract large number of tourists from around the world to visit the place.
Janmasthami
The birth of Lord krishna is celebrated all around the country on that day. In delhi special celebrations take place in Lakshmi Narayan Temple. People gather in the temple premises to sing bhajans and offer prayers.
Independence Day
Like 26 January, 15th August is also celebrated in the city as the Independence Day to mark the Indian independence from the British rule in the year 1947. The Prime minister of the nation addresses the nation from the Red Fort and many people gather around the Red Fort to hear the Prime Minister's address.
Dussehra
This is the prime time for hindu festivities and is celebrated all over India to mark the victory of good over evil. In the east it is celebrated as Durga Puja, in west it is called Navratri and in the north it is Dussehra. In delhi spectacular performances of the Ramlila ballet are held in the Ram Lila grounds for continuous ten nights with the burning of large effigies of Ravana, Kumbhkarn and Meghnath the son of Ravana are burnt to mark the victory over evil on the last night.
Diwali
One of the most bright festivals of the hindus is the festival of lights. It is celebrated all round the city with great pomp and fanfair. The houses and streets are lit with lights and diyas and bright fireworks and crackers light up the night sky. Goddess Lakshmi is offered flowers, sweets and other offerrings. People visit the temples to take part in bhajans and prayers. People exchange sweets and greetings and it is the highest time for merriment in the city.
Christmas
Christmas is widely celebrated all around the country with the same fanfair as in the rest of the world. In Delhi also this occassion marks carols, christmas trees, cakes and people gathering together to sing and dance and have fun. Parties are organised in several of the city restaurants and clubs for the people to enjoy.
