Shaking Minarets
To see the miracles of Ahmedabadi architecture, called Shaking
Minarets (Jhoolta Minar), you must head for Sidhi Bashir mosque, where
when one minaret is moved with force, the other shakes in sympathy.
Unfortunately, after the Qutab Minar tragedy during which many were
crushed, climbing up the Minaret to feel the 'shaking' has been dis-allowed.
Sarkhej Monuments
Sarkhej Roza is situated in the suburbs of the Ahemdabad city, on the
south highway. This place is a cluster of monuments dating back to the
days when the Mughals ruled this place. This place, Sarkhej, was home of
the Muslim religious leader Ahmed Khattu Gang Baksh, who was the spiritual
guide of the founder of Ahmedabad, Sultan Ahmed Shah. This place is a
rival of the great Taj Mahal in terms of the Roza or the maqbara or the
mausoleum, this is the tomb of the Sultan Mahmud Begado here is a huge 140
feet area and is one of the largest mausoleum in India.
This is one of the most elegant architectural complexes in the city,
Sarkhej Roza presents a unique complex of beautifully carved buildings.
The Roza of Sarkhej, adjoins the tomb of Ahmed Khattu Gang Baksh, and both
are developed in the true Mughal style of architecture. This place is a
must visit heritage spot in Ahemdabad city. With its huge mausoleum and
the fact that two architecturally beautiful monuments are situated side by
side attracts a lot of visitors to this place.
Adalaj Vav
Adalaj Vav is situated 18 kms. north of Ahmedabad in Gandhinagar
district. Built in 1499 A.D. by Queen Rudabai, this step well at the
village Adalaj is a fine example of magnificent architectural form, unique
to Northwestern India.
The step well or Vav as it is locally called is intricately carved and is
several stories in depth. The designs on its walls and pillars include,
leaves, flowers, birds, fish and other breathtaking ornamental designs.
A unique characteristic of step wells was that they not only conserved
water but were also cool chambers where one could rest during hot summer
months. In the olden days, these step wells used to be frequented by
travellers and caravans as stopovers along their trade routes.
Jumma
Masjid
Described by some as the most beautiful mosque in India, the
congregational mosque was built by the city's founder, Sultan Ahmed Shah
in 1423. Built in yellow sandstone, it combines the best of Hindu and
Muslim styles of architecture. It stands on 260 pillars supporting 15
domes at varying elevations. The mosque is located in the centre of the
old city.
Sabarmati Ashram
On a quiet stretch of the river
Sabarmati, 7 kms. north of the city, Mahatma Gandhi set up a simple
retreat in 1915. This was his first Satyagraha Ashram and for many it was
the nerve centre of India's freedom movement.
Hridaya Kunj, the cottage where he lived is preserved as it was in the
Mahatma's lifetime. The Gandhi Ashram has a memorial centre, library and a
sound and light spectacle to offer its visitors. Rani
Roopmati Mosque
The Queen's mosque in Mirzapur, built between 1430 and 1440 is more
representative of the pattern of mosque building in the 15th century
Ahmedabad. Three domes stand on twelve pillars each with the central part
raised to let in natural light without direct sunlight. The interior is
richly ornamented with carvings and finely perforated stone screens
