Jammu and Kashmir is a state very famous for handicrafts. The textile and shawls from the state is famous all over the world. Particularly 'Pashmina' wools shawls, which are in great demand all over the world. The dry fruits from Jammu and Kashmir are of good quality and are even exported. Thus one has many things to purchase from the state capital. The decorative pieces made from walnut wood are available at a very low price. These pieces contain some good inlay work and carvings. Walnut items are also used in day to day life as well as serve as good gift and souvenirs. The textile from Jammu and Kashmir carry delicate thread work. The artisans spend lots and lots of time in making these and as work is only done by hand, these items are costly. But the cost is worth the work done on them.

There is a whole string of government handicraft emporiums scattered around Srinagar, but the main one is housed in the fine old British Residency building by the Bund.The flashiest shops are along the Boulevard by Dal Lake.The Bund also has some interesting shops, including Suffering Moses with high- quality goods. Shikaras patrol Dal Lake like sharks, loaded down with goodies.
The main shopping areas in Jammu are Vir Marg, Raghunath Bazaar and Hari Market. The government arts emporium at Vir Marg offers good quality and reasonable rates on various items.
