Belgaum
Fort
On a rather bald plateau in the north -western corner of the State is
Belgaum. Known to be the regional capital in the 12th and 13th centuries
it came under the influence of the Yadavas, before being taken by the
Great Bahamani Statesman Mohmud Gawan in 1474.
Quenching curiosity
The Fort was rebuilt and the town became a major stronghold. In 1511, it
was granted to a military officer named Asad Khan in recognition of his
bravery and assistance to the Sultan. Over the coming years Asad
established himself as one of the major players in the Deccan managing to
outwit the Sultans of Bijapur, the Vijayanagar Kings and the Portugese to
increase his own personal fortune.
After Asad's death Belgaum came back under the control of Bijapur, before
passing to the Mughals, and then the Marathas. The British captured the
town in 1818, and it became a military garison -- a function that is
evident even today in the presence of barracks within the old fortress.
Today Belgaum is a busy modern town, known to tourists mainly for its bus
and train links, and for the fact that it has the only airport in north
Karnataka.
The old oval-shaped stone fort near the bus stand has no great historical
interest, although it makes a placid retreat from the bustle of the town.
An interesting fact being that Mahatma Gandhi was once locked up here
