Introduction 
Calicut is the major town in the area. Its also conveniently in the centre
of the region and is well connected. Calicut also called "Kozhikode."
Calicut is a major city in Kerala. Formerly one of Asia's most
prosperous trading capitals, the coastal city of KOZHIKODE (Calicut),
25km north of Kochi, occupies an extremely important place in Keralan legend
and history. Kozhikode was the most important region of Malabar in the days
gone by. Today lush green countryside's, serene beaches, historic sites,
wildlife sanctuaries, rivers, hills, a unique culture and a warm, friendly
ambience make Kozhikode a popular destination.
History
The
history of Kozhikode district as an administrative unit begins from January
1957. When the states of the Indian Union were reorganized on linguistic
basis on 1st November, 1956, the erstwhile Malabar district was separated
from Madras state (Tamil Nadu) and added to the new anilingual state of
Kerala. Early history of Calicut except for some prehistoric rock-cut caves
that have been found at many places
of the district. During the Sangam age, the district was under the Chera
administration until ad 1122. This was the time when this region was a major
center of trade between Kerala and the outside world. The city of Calicut
came into existence in the 13th century when Udaiyavar, the king of Ernad,
conquered the area around Ponniankar and built a fort at a place called
Velapuram, now known as Calicut. Interestingly, the name Calicut is derived
from calico, the fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth said to have
originated from this place. The outer world came to know about India in 1498
when Vasco da Gama came to Calicut and obtained permission to carry out
trade from here. Quickly in succession came the English and Dutch. Disputes
over the control of Calicut continued for a long time until 1792, when the
East India Company went into an agreement with the local Zamori rulers to
directly administer this area. Kerala was declared a state in 1956, and
Calicut today is one of the most important centers of trade and business in
this progressive state.
Festival
Malabar Mahotsava:-
Malabar mahotsava is a cultural that showcases the centuries old rich rich
cultural heritage of kerala. The event takes place in the heart of
kozhikode/Calicut town from 13th to 16th century January from year. The
festival highlights musical concerts and performances of various classical
dances. The festival is also an occasion to relish the native cuisine and
enjoy the mind blowing fire work displays..
Jalotsavams:- Three
Jalotsavams (water fiestas) are held every year as part of the Onam
festivals. It is conducted by the sports clubs at Korappuzha, Moorad and
Pongilodippara.
Utsavam at Sree Venkateswara Temple:- It
is celebrated for 7 days during Sivaratri week. Elephant procession,
exhibition, fair and fairworks are conducted during the festival.
