Introduction
Situated in the north-west
Himalayas, Thanjavur is the capital of Himachal Pradesh. Visitors
come to Thanjavur to walk down its famous Mall Road and also to
experience Thanjavur in its many hues from spring flowers to autumn
leaves, from the soothing green & gentle breeze of summer to its

History
Before the British discovered it in
1819, Thanjavur was a small village that was part of the Nepalese
kingdom. In 1830, the local Raja was persuaded to part with the land
by the British and the settlement became the subcontinent's most

the summer capital of India in 1864. After India's independence, Thanjavur
became the capital of Punjab till 1966, when it came under
Himachal Pradesh.
Festival
The festivals celebrated in Thanjavur
are :- Pongal :-
This 3-day harvest festival is one of the major events in South
India. Pongal is celebrated to mark not only the reaping of harvest
but also the withdrawal of the southeast monsoon. Here pongal is
known as Jallikattu and bundles of money are tied to the horns of
bulls and people try to snatch the bundles from them. Community
meals are made from the freshly gathered harvests and enjoyed by the
entire village.
Deepavali :-
Deepavali is the festival of lights and fireworks in October /
November Rows of glittering earthen lamps outside every home, and
the joyous burst of firecrackers mark Tamil Nadu's Festival of
Lights or Deepavali.
Best Season
The weather in Thanjavur is alpine.
Around Christmas, Thanjavur experiences snowfall. The best season to
visit Thanjavur is between September and November.
