Introduction
Lucknow is the capital of Uttar Pradesh, one of the biggest states in India and is situated on the banks of the river
Gomati. It is famous for its Gardens, Parks and unique archaeological monuments.
From ancient times, the city is known for its silks, perfumes,
jewellery, mouth-watering cuisines, and nawabi etiquettes. Lucknow is associated with its legendary hospitality, leisurely moods of life,
world-renowned cuisine and exquisite Sham-e-Avadh.
History
Lucknow derives its name from Lakshman, brother of Lord Rama the hero of the Indian epic,
Ramayana. In 1732, Muhammad Shah the king of the Mughal dynasty, appointed Mohammad Amir Saadat
Khan the viceroy of the area known as Avadh, of which Lucknow was a part. The rapid growth of Lucknow dates from 1755 when the fourth Nawab, Asaf-ud-Daula transferred the capital of Avadh from Faizabad to Lucknow.
During this period, Lucknow also established its pre-eminent place in the field of poetry, music, and dance. Even today, when one wanders through the city, one encounters the kind of refined courtesy and polish that seems to belong to another age.
Festival
There are a few festivals which are celebrated in unique luknawi stlye. i.e. Lucknow
Mahautsav, :- On this occasion a 10-day
program begins on the 25th November and ends on the 5th December. In
this festive event, the rich cultural heritage of the city is
showcased. Events like plays, classical and semi classical music and
dance recitals, kite flying and tonga races take place.
Shi'ite Muharram :- Lucknow has been famous
for its Muharram celebration since the time of the Nawabs. Muharram
is not a festival in the celebratory sense as it mourns the Karbala
tragedy when Imam Husain, grandson of Prophet Muhammad, was martyred
in the early days of Islamic history.
Deva Mela :- The annual urs of Haji
Waris Ali Shah is celebrated between October and November at Deva 10 km.
from Barabanki. This fair attracts pilgrims from all parts of world. The shrine
of the Sufi Saint is much revered by Muslim pilgrims all over the world.
Best Season
The climate of Lucknow is characterized by hot and humid summers but cold and chilly winters. Summers generally start by the end of March and remains till June.
Winter starts from October and it remains for almost five months. The best time to visit Lucknow
is in winter, i.e., between October and February, when the climate is pleasant and
comfortable.
