Introduction
Situated in the Indian state of
Uttaranchal, rishikesh is a very important Hindu pilgrimage site and
is one of the most popular pilgrim centres and gateway to the
Himalayan Shrines of Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri and Yamunotri.
rishikesh is famous for its yoga sessions that are taught here by
many yoga experts. Besides the sadhus and saints, a mass of tourists
too visits this place every year to have a look at this much heard
about place. As if the wonderful scenery and the numerous pilgrimage
sites were not enough, rishikesh also makes some of the most popular
adventure sport destinations of India. River rafting, trekking, rock
climbing, hiking etc are some of the activities one can easily opt
for here.
History
According to mythology, the sage Raibhya Rishi sat on the banks of the Ganga and
performed severe penance. He was rewarded when the lord appeared in the form of
rishikesh, thus giving the place its present name. Another legend is of the
Bharat temple. This temple is said to have been used by Bharat, Lord Ram's
younger brother, who underwent severe penance during the time when Lord Ram was
in exile. There is also a huge tank, which is believed to have been used by Lord
Ram for bathing. During the 1960s, this place become very popular for the fact
that the famous rock bands 'the Beatles' found their guru here.
Festival
Besides celebrating all the general
Hindu festivals, there is a special festival celebrated in this area
and that is :- The International
Yoga Week :-
It is usually celebrated in February every year. This
festival is the ideal place and time to learn some real yoga
postures to keep oneself fit and fine.
Diwali Festival
:-
The most beautiful of all Indian festivals, Diwali is a
celebration of lights. The Diwali night in particular is a
delightful feast to watch. On the same night "Laxmi Poojan"
is held and the Goddess is venerated. Legend has it that Laxmi the
Goddess of wealth visits all the houses hence all the houses are
well-lighted and kept open. Diwali also ushers the" Hindu
New Year".
Best Season
The period between October
and April could be termed as best as during this period, the
climate of rishikesh is at its pleasant best. Cotton clothing is appropriate
for summers though woolens are required for the winter months.
