Victoria Memorial
At the southern end of Maidan stands the Victoria Memorial built between
1906 and 1921 on the lines of the Taj Mahal in memory of Queen Victoria.
This huge white-marble museum houses a vast collection of memorabilia from
the days of British empire. There are potraits, statues and busts of
almost all the main participants in British India history. Two regular
sound and light shows are held in the evening. Closed on Mondays. Rabindra Sadan
The Rabindra Sadan, Nandan and the Academy of Fine Arts form the cultural
zone of Calcutta. While Rabindra Sadan is an excellent auditorium, Nandan
is one of the best movie theaters in India. The arts flourish in Calcutta
and Calcutta is often called the cultural capital of India. Belur Math
This beautiful place, on the banks of the river Hooghly, is the
headquarters of the Ramakrishna Mission. The beautiful settings are in
stark contrast to the industrial surroundings of Belur. The mission was
founded in 1938 by Swami Vivekananda (1863-1902)and named after his mentor
Shri Ramakrishna Paramahansa (1836-1886).The Ramakrishna Mission is famous
for its missionary work and has branches all over the world. Schools and
colleges run by the mission are amongst the best in the country. The main
temple in Belur Math incorporates the various architectural styles of the
different religions of India. Tagore House
The Thakurbari or the house of the Tagores is in Jorasanko, north
Calcutta. It was built in the 18th century by Prince Dwarkanath Tagore (Rabindranath
Tagore's grandfather). The complex has several buildings. Gurudev
Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) was born here. The house is today a
museum. The Rabindra Bharati University which specializes in the fine arts
is also in this complex. Howrah Bridge
The famous Howrah Bridge: Also known as the Rabindra Setu, this cantilever
bridge is an engineering marvel. It was built in 1943 and is 97 metres
(295 ft) high and 705 meters (2,150 ft) long. It connects Calcutta to its
twin city - Howrah. Howrah is an important industrial area and also serves
as the railroad terminus of Calcutta. From dawn to dusk the Howrah bridge
hums with activity which makes it the world's busiest bridge.
