Top 5 Beaches in Sri Lanka

People travel from all around the world to witness Sri Lanka’s finest beaches. The scenic views of these magnificent sandy shores will entice you to return to these stunning beaches in and around Sri Lanka. Here in this blog, I will tell you about the top 5 beaches of Sri Lanka which you should visit once in your lifetime. So, Let’s start exploring….

1. Nilaveli:

Nilaveli Beach is located on a small island in the northeastern part of Sri Lanka. There is a distance of 15 km (30-minute drive approx.) from Trincomalee city.

This is where you’ll find the pure white sand contrasts beautifully with the deep blue oceans, rendering even the most ordinary mornings truly amazing! This tropical paradise would help you forget about the stresses of city life and immerse you in peace and tranquilly.

2. Arugam Bay:

Arugam Bay is a concealed jewel on Sri Lanka’s east coast. It is not very popular amongst visitors because it is situated far from the capital and other tourist attractions. As a result, it has continued to maintain its small-town charm while growing in popularity among travellers.

If you love to do surfing, then I would like to suggest you visit Arugam Bay. In 2019, I have visited this beach and let me tell you that I enjoyed every second which I spent there. If you visit this beach during the non-peak season, you would be astonished to see numerous migratory birds.

While enjoying the calmness of this wonderful beach, don’t forget to visit Elephant Rock. This place offers you a scenic view of the beach and has a splendid view of the sunset.

Also, I experienced the Lagoon Safari which is an amazing experience in itself. If you have two hours to spare, explore this amazing activity. During this activity, you will visit unexplored lagoons like Urani and Kottukal where you will see many creatures like Crocodiles and Elephants.

3. Mirissa:

The fine sands of Mirissa Beach, on the south coast, are backed by palm trees, and the clear waters and vibrant waves make it suitable for surfing and swimming. Mirissa draws visitors across the globe for both ecological and vacation reasons, thanks to its views of aquatic wildlife in its natural habitat.

As I love to visit beaches, I had a visit to this beach also. This beach is also famous for spotting dolphins and Whales. In the month of December, you may see some turtles laying eggs too. In Mirissa, you can enjoy Ayurvedic Massage in Ayurvedic centres.

4. Unawatuna:

If we talk about the best beaches of Sri Lanka, the list would be incomplete without Unawatuna. This beach is popular for calm blue waters. Also, if lucky, one can spot a whale shark which makes this beach a must-visit beach of Sri Lanka. One can visit this beach in late August or early September.

What’s your opinion about Scuba diving or Snorkeling? If you love to do these activities, you can try them here. Also, Unawatuna is popular for turtle nesting.

5. Uppuveli:

Uppuveli is one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches. If you’re looking for a breathtaking landscape, classic accommodations, and authentic cuisine, Uppuveli is the place to go. You’ll be astounded by how the locals greet visitors and include them in their festivities. This village, located away from the city’s hustle and bustle, is full of natural beauty and relaxation.

If you are visiting this place, don’t forget to hire a Rickshaw and explore the natural beauty of the beautiful village. Swami Rock in Trincomalee is a must-see attraction that not only protects the village from tsunamis but also makes it ideal for water sports like swimming, diving and snorkelling.
