Location of Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary

Changtang or Changthang Wildlife Sanctuary is sited in the Changthang Plateau in Leh, in the Ladakh region of Jammu and Kashmir. It is also known as ChangthangCold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary. You will find a few of the highest altitude lakes in this wildlife sanctuary ? TsoMoriri, PangongTso, and TsoKar. TsoMoriri is known to be the highest lake on this planet and this is a major attraction of this wildlife park.


Climatic conditions

The region experiences harsh climatic conditions throughout the year and most of its areas remained unexplored till the recent years. The temperature here ranges from -5 degree Celsius to -35 degree Celsius. The summer season (March-June) stays for a short span but is pleasant and comfortable with a temperature ranging from 12 degrees to 23 degrees. During winter (November-February)temperature usually stays between 0 degree to -20 degrees or even less. It is needless to say that the region remains bitterly cold and experiences thunderstorms throughout the year. Inspite of having unfavorable climatic conditions, this sanctuary has managed to attract the interest of the tourists, who flock to this region to witness the grandeur of its unspoiled, pristine beauty.

The suitable time to visit the wildlife sanctuary is between the months of May and December when the weather is somewhat pleasant for an excursion in the region. June is the ideal time to visit amidst these months.

Over 200 species of wild plants are found here, which the animals feed on. Due to the harsh climatic conditions and high elevation of the wildlife sanctuary, vegetation is sparse here,however, you will find many endangered species of medicinal plants, which make a lovely sight to witness.
