Desert National Park is a brilliant example of the desert ecosystem and chiefly comprises rocks and compact salt lake bottoms, intermedial areas and fixed dunes. Climatic conditions

Being located amidst the desert, the summer season reaches its extreme with temperature touching upto a whopping 50?C in the mercury. The winters offer the much needed respite from the scorching heat with temperature staying around 9?C to 25?C. Although the temperature might fall even lower.

Animals that inhabit the sanctuary

The dominant mammals here include:

Camel, Desert Fox, Wolf, Desert Cat, Blackbuck, Bengal Fox, Chinkara, Hedgehog, and Nilgai are easily sighted here.

The main reptiles sighted here are Russell?s viper, Gecko, Persian Gecko, Spiny tailed lizard, Saw scaled viper, Saw Scaled Viper, Monitor Lizard, Common Krait, Spiny Tailed Lizard, and more.

Vegetation


The flora of Desert National Park, Jaisalmer is also interesting.The main vegetation comprises of:

Ronj, Rohira, Dhok, Khejri, Khair, Palm trees, Ber, Aak shrub, Sewan grass and more.

Dominating the region of the Desert National Park, which is otherwise mainly barren, is the semi-arid type with thorny plants and bushes. Patches of sewan grass and calotropis are sometimes found punctuating the region. Craggy rocks, palm trees, salt bottom lakes are easily spotted here. These lakes are the main sources of water for the wildlife. PadamTalao, Rajbaug, Gadsisar, Milak lakes are the main water bodies.

Avian species


Birds as mentioned can be seen in great numbers of which Great Indian Bustard is a must. The others are Falcons, Eagles, Larks, Demoiselle Crane, Vultures, Bee-Eaters, Shrikes, Macqueen?s Bustard, Honey Buzzards, chats, Sandgrouse, Long-Legged, babblers, and kites.

How to reach the National park ?

Airways

  • Jaisalmer airport located 5 km from the city is the closest airport from the Park. But as this airport is managed by the Indian Air Force, it is functional only from September to March. For others who want to reach the place by air avail the Jodhpur airport which is located about 285 km away and takes around three and a half hours to reach. The nearest international airport is New Delhi and is properly connected to other major cities like Delhi, Agra, Mumbai, Kolkata and more.

Railways

Jaisalmer railway station located 42 km from the city which is the closest railhead. There are many private cars, jeeps and other vehicles available for transfer from the rail station.

Roadways

The Desert National Park is connected to Jaisalmer by well-maintained roads as the area falls under the military region. The Rajasthan State Road Transport Corporation runs regular buses that connect the place to different cities across the state.
