The name of the Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is after Red Eagle Division of Indian Army, which actually was a base camp of Indian Army in that place in the year 1950. Wildlife at the eaglenest wildlife sanctuary

Eaglenest came into the spotlight after the sudden discovery of a rare bird species, BugunLiocichla, in 2006, which is named after the community Bugun, which lives in this area. Apart from this, there are almost 700 other species of birds like Ward?s Trogon, Wedge-Billed Babbler, Beautiful Nuthatch, and so on.

The biodiversity of Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary is full of454 species of bird, 165 species of butterflies, 24 species of snakes, 34 species of amphibians, and 7 species of lizards. The wildlife is creative here, which makes it one of the most protected ecological areas of the country.

The vegetation found in the area consists of broad-leaved forests, bamboos, lowland evergreen forests, roadside scrubs, conifers, and farmlands.

Reptiles

Reptiles are another attraction of the sanctuary. The species found in this area are Geckos Agamids and Skinks. Other rare species found here includeAnderson?s Mountain Lizard, Darjeeling False-Wolf Snake, Gunther?sKukri Snake, Common Slug Snake, and KeelbackSnakes. After 125 years, Abor Hill Agama was rediscovered in the Sanctuary.

Butterflies

Butterfliesare also in abundance at the Sanctuary. Some species include Bhutan Glory, Grey Admiral, Scarce Red-Forester, Jungle Queen, Tiger Brown, White-Edged Bush-Brown, Dusky Labyrinth, and White Owl.

The nearest airport is Tezpur from Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary, which is at a distance of 150 km. Another important airport is Guwahati Airport within 334 km. The easiest transport is a taxi to reach the sanctuary from the airport.

Railways

The nearest railway station is Bhalukpong, which is 94 km from the sanctuary. Cab or hired taxi is the way between the station and the sanctuary.

Roadways

The Tawang-Tezpur road is the linkto the sanctuary with popular cities like Tezpur ? 150 km, Tawang ? 25 km, and Bomdila ? 50 km. Taxi and Bus services can be availed from the cities to the sanctuary mentioned above. Tenga to Tezpur is 17 km and takes almost 3.5 hours. Tenga can also be accessedeasily from Tezpur or Guwahati.

As mentioned above, rented cab or taxi is the easiest way to travel to and fro the cities. You need to leave from Tenga for Lama Camp ? one of the camps of Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary to stay. Right before the sanctuary?s entrance, there is a village named Sign Chung, which you need to cross. Once you reach, mention the name of the village to the locals so that they can direct you further.

Accommodation facilities

Two camps namely Lama Camp and Bompu Camp are the main places to stay risk-free. These camps are operated by the Bugun Welfare Society.

Lama Camp

It is the nearest camp from the sanctuary entrance. The camp got its name after the visit of Dalai Lama. The birdwatchers route was once used as a way to flee during the Indo-China war of 1962.

Bompu Camp

Bompu is the local pronunciation of the word bamboo, and the camp is surrounded by various species of this plant and is 40 km away from the sanctuary entrance. The two campsites have permanent accommodation pieces of stuff like beddings, tents, towels, and solar lanterns. Bathrooms are common but with western-style toilets, and toilet paper. There are no sources of running water but plenty of water filled buckets are there. Also, there is no electricity but after evening, generators can be turned on if the need arises. Lama Camp has some wooden steps to the tent but Bompu Camp is flat.

If you want to stay in the atmosphere of the jungle, go for these camps. You can birdwatch along the way while you travel between the camps. They provide breakfast and lunch. You can either opt for driving or for walking, but your own vehicle will be handy in this kind of excursions.
