The park is known for tigers and many rare migratory birds. But the most attractive feature of the Kaziranga National Park is that it holds about two-thirds of the entire population of Indian one-horned rhinoceroses. The park is overlooked by and maintained by the Government of India and the Government of Assam. The park has been declared as World Heritage Site.


Location of Kaziranga National Park

Located in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts area of Assam in India, the Kaziranga National Park is a protected area of forests, wetlands, and grasslands. The park is spread across the floodplains of the Brahmaputra River and includes an area of 430 km2.

The National Park stretches across 378 sq. km of land with an addition of 429 sq. of land. The Kaziranga National Park was declared as a UNESCO in the year 1985. The park is located at the edge of Eastern Himalayan biodiversity and enjoys the waters of the Brahmaputra River. The Kaziranga Park is made of fertile alluvial soil formed by the erosion and silt deposition of the Brahmaputra River.

The geographical landscape of the National Park includes forests, wetlands, and grasslands. The geographical location of the Kaziranga National Park is 26?30' N, and 26?45' N, and longitudes 93?08' E to 93?36' E. The southern boundary of the park is Mora Diphlu, Brahmaputra River forms the northern and eastern boundaries. Apart from the Brahmaputra River the National Park also includes Diphlu and Mora Dhansiri rivers.

The rivers here keep the entire park cool and pleasant.

Climatic conditions

According to the geographical conditions of the park, the National Park experiences three seasons, summers, monsoon and winters. The winter season here begins in November and lasts up to February. The temperatures during the winter season range between 25 ?C and 5 ?C. Summers here begin in March and end at May, during this season the animals are usually found near the water bodies. The climate during summers is dry and hot.

The monsoon season here lasts June to September. The annual rainfall here is 2,220 mm.

The Kaziranga National Park experiences hot and humid summers, which are usually dry. The monsoon season here is not suitable for visits, as every year River Brahmaputra floods in. The animals, during such times, move to higher grounds.

The natural vegetation or flora


The natural vegetation of the park is primarily divided into three parts, tropical semi-evergreen forests, alluvial inundated grasslands, and tropical wet evergreen forests. Sugarcanes, elephant grass, the common reed and spear grass are some of the common types of tall grass types found here. The area around the Brahmaputra River is characterized by tall elephant grasses and swamplands. Apart from this, the Kaziranga National Park?s vegetation includes rugged reeds, sheer woods, shallow pools, and marshes.

One can even find Rattan Cane, which is a climbing palm. The presence of Rattan Cane adds beauty to the park. Open jungles, water bodies, short grasses, and tall grasses make up for the flora in the park.

Kaziranga National Park is one of the most diverse wildlife parks in the country. The safari rides in the national sanctuary include four different ranges, namely, Kaziranga Range, Eastern Range, Western Range, and Burapahar Range. All four safari rides/ranges have different timings. These safari rides take place twice in a day, one in the early morning at 5:30 AM and the next in the afternoon, at 3:00 PM.

You can even take part in the jeep safari rides at the park to observe the beauty of the park. There are two slots for the safari rides, one early in the morning at 7.30 AM and the other one in the afternoon, 2:00 PM. You can even trek at the Kaziranga National Park; there are two trails, 11 and 5-kilometer trails.
