The Namdapha National Park is located in the Changlang district of north-eastern state of India- Arunachal Pradesh. Spread over 1985 sq km of dense forest in far-most part of Arunachal Pradesh, this place is an ecological hot spot which has a huge array of animal and plant species. Recognized as one of the richest areas in biodiversity in India, it is known for extensive Dipterocarp forests among the last great remote wilderness areas of Asia. It is infact, the largest protected area in the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot.

In terms of area, this is the third largest national park in India. Namdapha lies along the turbulent Noa-Dihing River and was established as a wildlife sanctuary in 1972. It was further declared as a tiger reserve and national park in 1983. Ranging from warm tropical plains to icy Himalayan highlands, the Park is particularly known for being the only park in India with four big-cat species - tiger, leopard, snow leopard and clouded leopard. Climatic conditions

Namdapha is surrounded by the eastern Himalayan ranges of Mishmi hills which is why it experiences a pleasant climate all through the year. Some peaks are snow-capped all through the year while the rest of them show a variation. The temperature during the winter months of November to February revolves around 15?C to 20?C. In the summer months, which are from March to October, it is around 27?C to 32?C.

Animals that inhabit the sanctuary

The diverse vegetations and climate of Namdaphasupports the habitation of diverse species of animals and birds. It is only park in the World to have the four Feline species of big cat in the same area. Tiger, Leopard, Clouded Leopard, and Snow Leopard (PantheraUncia) are spotted in this region. A number of primate species are also seen in the region, such as Assamese Macaque, stump-tailed Macaque, and pig-tailed Macaque. A large number of the distinctive Hoolock Gibbons, which are the rare and highly endangered and only 'Ape' species found in India dwells in this impenetrable dense forest. Of the many other important animals are the Indian Bison, Elephants, Black Bear, numerous species of Deer, reptiles and a variety of arboreal animals are some of the other mammals tourists can easily spot. Himalayan tahr, Wild buffalo, Wolves, Red panda, Red fox, Yellow-throated marten, Bharal, Slow Loris, CappedLangurs are the other significant animals.
Among the reptiles Reticulated Python, Indian Python, King Cobra, Monitor lizard are the significant ones.

Flora


The beautiful forests possess a huge range of biodiversity of flora. A detailed study of its species and genetic variation is still under process. The Park is perhaps every botanist's ideal vacationing spot and it might take many a years to complete an all-inclusive survey of its botanical resources. There are more than 150 timber species as recorded as of now. The PinusMerkusi and AbiesDelavavi are the two species which are not found elsewhere in India. One of the rarest and most endangered orchids of the world, the Blue Vanda is seen here. The most famous local medicinal plant MishimiTeeta, is grown widely. It is used by the local tribes for all kinds of diseases, although the export of this plant has been banned.

Avi fauna


Among the bird species, the most notable ones are the White winged Wood Ducks, which are a rare and endangered species. More commonly, one can find the great Indian Hornbills, Jungle Fowls and Pheasants who constantly chatters throughout the jungle. The inaccessibility to the greater part of the park has helped to keep the forests in its pristine state maintaining the natural form. The lush green under the growths are thick and intertwined like cobwebs of wild bananas, canes, bamboos, and variety of vegetations. The grandeur of the wet tropical rain forest serves as the breeding ground for varieties of animals and birds which worth seeing and exploring. To name a few other bird species, Forest Eagle, Rufous-necked hornbill, Green cochoa, Owl White-winged Wood Duck, Snowy throated babblers, Chakma, Fairy Bluebird, Peafowl, and Assam Bamboo Partridge are easily spotted.

How to reach the National park ?

Airways

  • The nearest airport to the National Park is at Mohanbari, Dibrugarh which is 160 km from Miao. The Forest Rest House at Deban is about 182 km.

Railways

Magherita station and Tinsukia Railway station are the nearest railheads to the National Park. Private taxis can be hired from the station to reach the place easily. Tinsukia railway station in Assam is about 140km and is well connected by road to the National Park.

Roadways

As the place is tucked away in the east near the Myanmar border, reaching Namdapha National Park is a bit complicated compared to any other tourist place. Assam State Transport Corporation and Arunachal Pradesh State Transport buses are run at regular intervals daily from Dibrugarh to Miao via Tinsukia, Margherita, Ledo, Jagun and Kharsang. Enroute, there is a halt for the Inner Line Permits and is the point where one crosses the Assam border.

Accommodation facilities

Inspection Bungalow, Eco-Tourist Forest Guest House, Namdapha Jungle Camp, Circuit house, Circuit House, and Tourist Lodge are some of the preferred places of stay for the guests. All these are located at Miao. Deban Forest Rest House is located within the National Park. There are some private stays available as well.
