Without any argument, it can be said that Nauradehi Wildlife Sanctuary, located in the heart of Madhya Pradesh, is one of the largest wildlifereserves in India when one is talking about the landmass. This sanctuary was established in the year 1975.

Location of Nauradehi wildlife sanctuary

Situated at the tri-junction of Sagar, Damoh, and Narsinghpur districts, this sanctuary suddenly came to the limelight, when it was selected for Cheetah-reintroduction Project in India. This wildlife sanctuary holds a great biodiversity value. The two major river basins, which flow through this sanctuary, are the Narmada and the Ganga. Three-fourths of the sanctuary falls in the Narmada basin while the other one-fourth falls in the Ganga belt. The six ranges in which the wildlife sanctuary has been divided are the Mohli range, Jhapan range, D?Gaon range, Singpur range, Sarra range, and the Nauradehi range.

An interesting fact worth knowing

Earlier, there were no tigers in Nauradehi. So, an initiative was undertaken under the Tiger-reintroduction plan. For the successful implementation of this campaign, a request was sent to Panna Tiger Reserve to send some of their trained staff, who could look into the working of this project. Recently, some elephants also have been requested to be sent from Satpura Tiger Reserve. Also, in this reserve, the cheetah population is on the verge of extinction, so a step has been taken in this direction too so that the cheetahs do not become extinct. Around 750 square kilometers of land area has been considered as a ground site for this purpose. 23 villages of this area have been requested for allocation so that 50-60 cheetahs can be housed in the vacated area.

Climatic conditions

The climate here generally tends to be warm. During the summers, the temperature can reach a maximum limit of 48?C. The temperature range stays between 5?C to 30?C during the winter months. This area experiences warm monsoon with light rain. The average annual rainfall in this wildlife sanctuary is 1200 mm. The park remains closed during the monsoons so that the trees can rejuvenate without any outside disturbance.
