Sasan National Park, or commonly known as Gir National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary, is the only area where you can observe lions roaming around freely. This park is known for its Asiatic Lions, a species which is not found in any other part of Asia but here. Located near the TalalaGir in Gujarat, India, this park covers 1412 square kilometers. Out of the 1412 square kilometers, 258 km2 is fully protected, and the rest is a wildlife sanctuary.

Location of Sasan gir national park

Sasan Gir National Park is located in TalalaGir. There are seven perennial rivers in the region, namely, Hiran, Datardi, Shetrunji, Godavari, Machhundri, Shingoda, and Raval. Apart from this, there are four dams on four of the seven perennial rivers in the area. The dams in these rivers make the lives of animals in the park easier. However, the Kamleshwar Dam is known as the lifeline of the Sasan Gir National Park.

The park lies on the north-eastern side of Somnath, south-western side of Amreli and south-eastern side of Junagadh in Gujarat.

The landscape of the Sasan Gir National Park is perfect for the lions. The flatlands here offer a good view of the lions. The area usually remains dry in the summers, which is why most of the trees here are of dry deciduous species. The rivers add to the comfort of the animals.

The summers here are characterized by extremely hot days and are usually dry. Temperatures during summer days can go up to 40 ? C. Summers begin in March and end in May. The monsoon season starts in June and ends in October, the temperatures during this time are pleasant. Winters here can be harsh and cold, just like the summers. The temperatures during winters range from 08?C to 15?C.


Best time to visitSasan gir national park

As mentioned above, the summers here are hot. Although summers may seem like a bad idea to visit the park, it is the best time to observe the animals in the park and for photography. The park remains closed from mid-June to the month of October or September. If you are planning a trip, you should avoid planning one during the monsoon season here.

Climatically, the ideal time to visit the park would be anytime between the months of December to March.

Sasan National Park is known for its rich and dense biodiversity. However, it is famous for the population of Asiatic Lions, which are not found in any other area of Asia.

Initially, the survey of the Sasan Gir National Park had found a little more than 400 hundred species of plants in the park. However, this was revised by the Botany Department of M.S. University of Baroda, and the number came to a bit over five hundred.

Mostly, the plants, trees, and fauna of the are dry deciduous species. Teak is one of the most common types of trees found in the area. The forests here are dense and contain many types of trees. Some of the types of tress in the Sasan Gir National Park are jamun, babul, ber, dhak, tendu, and many others.

  • The nearest airport to the Sasan Gir National Park are the Keshod airport and Rajkot airport. The Keshod airport and Rajkot airport are, 70-kilometer and 160-kilometer away from the national park respectively. The Diu airport is not that far from the park either.

    With regular flights, one can reach any one of the airports and then make their way to the national park.

The nearest railway stations to the national park are Junagadh and Veraval railway stations. Trains to and from major cities can be found at these stations.

The jeep safari rides begin at 6 in the morning and go on until 6 in the evening.
