of the area used to invite British colonists to hunt. Tigers and lions were hunted on these grounds. As a result, the numbers of animals here dwindled. Asiatic lions in other areas of Asia were wiped out. In 1899, the population of the lions here decreased sharply due to famine. It was after this that efforts were made to protect the biodiversity of the area.
The park was established in Gujarat in order to save the habitat of the lions and in order to protect them. In 1960 hunting was banned in India and the place that we know as Gir National Park stopped serving as the private hunting grounds of the Nawabs of Junagarh. Various measures were taken in order to grow the dwindling numbers of the lions; breeding programs were put in place as well. At present, 180 lions have been bred in the park since its inception.
Sasan Gir National Park is located in TalalaGir. There are seven perennial rivers in the region, namely, Hiran, Datardi, Shetrunji, Godavari, Machhundri, Shingoda, and Raval. Apart from this, there are four dams on four of the seven perennial rivers in the area. The dams in these rivers make the lives of animals in the park easier. However, the Kamleshwar Dam is known as the lifeline of the Sasan Gir National Park.
The park lies on the north-eastern side of Somnath, south-western side of Amreli and south-eastern side of Junagadh in Gujarat.
The climate of the area is of the tropical monsoon type. The area experiences three types of seasons, summers, monsoons and winters. The summers here are characterized by extremely hot days and are usually dry. Temperatures during summer days can go up to 40 ? C. Summers begin in March and end in May. The monsoon season starts in June and ends in October, the temperatures during this time are pleasant. Winters here can be harsh and cold, just like the summers. The temperatures during winters range from 08?C to 15?C.
As mentioned above, the summers here are hot. Although summers may seem like a bad idea to visit the park, it is the best time to observe the animals in the park and for photography. The park remains closed from mid-June to the month of October or September. If you are planning a trip, you should avoid planning one during the monsoon season here.
Climatically, the ideal time to visit the park would be anytime between the months of December to March.
Sasan National Park is known for its rich and dense biodiversity. However, it is famous for the population of Asiatic Lions, which are not found in any other area of Asia.
