Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary is situated in south-east portion of Pratapgarh district Rajasthan and has been declared as the protected forest area by the Government of Rajasthan. It is a dense forest area with thick deciduous plantations and is sprawled over 422.95 square kilometers. The sanctuary is almost 165 kms away from
Udaipur and sprawls over the Aravali ranges and the Malwa plateau.
It is believed that Lord Rama?s wife Sita, lived in this forest in the ashram of Saint Valmiki, and that's the root of the name Sitamata. Any place with certain mythological importance leaves the scope of mysticism and hence is a loved place for the tourists.
The configuration of the land is mostly hilly and rugged with high altitude which varies from 280 to 600 m. The natural slope of the land is from North-West to South-East and has a network of perennial rivers. These rivers serve as the main source of water and support the riparian vegetation which is the main characteristic of the sanctuary. The Jakham, The Karmoi and Sitamata perennial rivers flows through the Sanctuary and helps to maintain a pleasant temperature nearby the water bodies.
But as it is in Rajasthan, the summers in Sita Mata Wildlife sanctuary are extremely hot and sometimes the highest temperature reaches close to 43 degree Centigrade. May and June are marked to be the hottest months throughout the year. The winter months can drop to a low of 6 degree Centigrade and the months of December and January are the coldest. Monsoons are relief from the scorching heat and are marked between June and September.
Between the months of October and February is the ideal time to visit Sita Mata Wildlife Sanctuary. The climate remains cool and longer journeys can easily be made during the day.
From the biota point of view, Sitamata is one of the richest sanctuaries. It houses close to 50 species of mammals, 40 species of reptiles, more than 325 species of birds, 9 species of amphibians, 30 species of fishes and more than 800 species of plants.
Birds like Grey jungle fowl, Aravlli red spur fowl, yellow footed Green Pigeon, Black -headed oriole, Indian paradise Flycatcher, Alexandrine parakeet, Stork-billed kingfisher, Indian pitta, Black lored tit, Purple-rumped sun bird, Monarach, ultra-marine verditor flycatchers are commonly spotted here.
Mammals such as Caracal, hyena, leopard, Chousingha, fox, porcupine, wild boar, pangolin, jackal, jungle cat, wild bear, spotted deer, flying fox and neelgai are also equally common to spot. The flying squirrel is the most commonly found animal. It hides itself during the daytime but can be found flying from tree to tree after sun down. They are most commonly found during the autumn season. This squirrel is one of the Indian jungles most glorious creatures to spot.
The Indian Panther is also seen who prey mainly on deer, cattle, dogs, lizard, rats and birds. The Panther live in rock shelters and small caves and mainly near the water holes with grassy areas in the Sitamata Jungle.

Railways
Pratapgarh is yet to be connected with a railway line but Mandsaur is the nearest railway station to the Sanctuary which is about 28 kilometers from the Sanctuary. It is about 110 kilometers far from Chittorgarh.
Roadways
Most routes in the region cross the Sitamata Wildlife Sanctuary and hence road connectivity is quite good. There are regular buses from Chittorgarh that connect the other towns through the sanctuary. There are cabs or rent taxis as well that are available for tourists. Those travelling by private vehicles can reach the Sanctuary from Pratapgarh via Udaipur - Pratapgarh road. Daily bus services go to and back from Banswara, Udaipur, Dungarpur, Jodhpur, Rajsamand, Madhya Pradesh and Delhi.
