Exploring the marine life at the end of india - South button island national park


Located in the Andaman district of Andaman and Nicobar Islands (Union territory) of India, South Button Island National Park was established in the year of 1987 covering an area of 0.03 Km2. It is basically a part of the Rani Jhansi Marine National Park.

On the southern side this island, there is a small spot in the sea with a rock-face rising out of the water. It is petty more than an acrein area but is a beautiful coral garden with many fascinating Grottoes. This small island descend along a tiny wall submerged on the western side and is the dwelling spot for Barracuda, Big-Eye Trevally, Snappers, Surgeonfish, and Napoleon


Climatic conditions

Given its location, there is predominantly an oceanic type of climate. The average temperature ranges between 20?C to 30?C. The place receives heavy downpour during the monsoon months of June to October.

Animals that inhabit the sanctuary

The most commonly spotted fauna of the region includes but not limited to Sea turtles, Dugongs, Dolphins, Blue whales, Snappers, Barracuda, Nudibranchs, Water lizards, Sweetlips, Lion fish, Devil rays, Shrimps, Surgeonfish, Angel fish, Butterfly fish, Manta rays, Octopuses, Barracuda, Napoleon Wrasse, Manta rays, Big-eye trevally, Devil rays, Leopard shark, Edible nest swiftlet, White bellied sea eagle.

The prime vegetation of south button island is definitely the shallow water coral reefs. What makes it more interesting is their high visibility from the top and interestingly, the tropical coral reefs found even at a depth of about 6 feet. To name a few of the dominant flora, it would include Calamuspalustris, Dinochloaandamanica, Caryotamitis, Aprosavillosula, Baccaureasapida, Hopeaodorata, Salmaliainsignis, Dinochloapalustris, Sideroxylon, Artocarpus, Dipterocarpuspilosus, Parishiainsignis, Calophyllumsoulattri, Endospermumchinensis, Canarium, and Dipterocarpusgrandiflorus.

Airways

  • Port Blair airport is the only connecting airport to this place. It is well connected with Delhi, Kolkata and Chennai Airport.

Railways

There is no railway station in Andaman and hence no rail head in South Button Island National Park. Nearest railway station is Chennai Railway Station in Chennai city of Tamil Nadu and is about 1,370km away from the park.

Roadways

Given is geographic location, there is no road connectivity of this place apart from the ones inside the island.

Campbell shoal - andaman


This is one of the known places situated about 10 nautical miles off the south-east Coast of Middle Andaman Island.Mostly tranquil and invulnerable, this diving site is based out amidst some surrounding hard coral reef. InAndamans, it is considered as the best places to enjoy diving from 5 meters to 25 meters. There are dinghies by which one can reach here. On the fordable parts, they are glazed with Coral Bommies and Table Corals and mainly descent down the reef with Acropora Corals.Lots of small fishes are seen here that add to the color of the underwater scenery.

Turtle island - andaman


Five kilometers away from north of South Button Island, this island is small in size and has beautiful white sandy beaches. Based in the southern coast, it has a very large shallow reef and offers huge opportunities for diving.In the eastern part, there is adequate scopes of diving and is joined with the Middle Button Island.This is indeed one of the most extraordinary leisure holiday destinations, particularly for those who love the sand, sea and sun.
