Bateshwar is a place named after Lord Shiva who is also known as Bateshwar Mahadev. It is believed that he resides in this region. It is also believed that Bateshwar is the birthplace of Lord Krishna’s mother. Bateshwar is a place which is tied to numerous myths and legends. Every year there is a fair held here known as the Bateshwar fair. The fair has a cattle fair and a religious fair which is conducted. Bateshwar fair, also known as the Bateshwar Mela, is a fair held at Bateshwar. It is situated 70 km from Agra in Uttar Pradesh and is an important spiritual and cultural centre. A large number of devotees come from all over the country to worship Bateshwar Mahadev also known as Lord Shiva.

Temples dedicated to the Gods and Goddesses of the Hindu pantheon can be found here. This place is of great religious importance to the Hindus. One of the most amazing features of Bateshwar is its extremely tall cliffs of clay. The majestic view of the 108 white temples along the banks of Yamuna give it an altogether different experience.

According to the Hindu calendar, in the month of Kartik which is in the month of November the annual cattle fair is held at Bateshwar every year along the banks of the river Yamuna. During this time the ambience is quite colourful at the Mela. Hundreds and thousands of cattle such as buffaloes, cows, camels, elephants, goats and bullocks from all over the country are brought to this fair. They are adorned in beautiful colours and rags and look very beautiful.

Different species of birds and pets can also be seen. These are usually for sale, and serious businesses take place between owners and buyers from all over the country. Since the fair is open to all, tourists from all over the world come over. Cultural programs are also performed for viewers.

Fair Attraction

Some of the main attractions at the fair are the availability of a wide variety of rural products such as utensils, colourful scarves and traditional clothes. Just like any fair, the Bateshwar Fair also treats it, visitors, with enormous gourmet delights. The food stalls at the fair have a large variety of mouth-watering edibles. This is the right place for foodies and people with cravings as the fair has a lot to offer. Milk-based items are also a treat sold at the fair. The 'petha' or the gourd preparation which is famous in Agra is seen here in large quantities.

Toys are also sold at this fair, and they take their theme from the animal fair. Many stalls have earthenware, wooden toys and lacquer work as well. The wooden toys can be found in the shape of animals and human figurines as well.
