The church was built on the banks of the Pamba River, at Edathua. It is the place where the Edathua Perunnal is held and the church is said to resemble the churches of medieval Europe. The annual feast here begins on the 27th of April with the hoisting of the festival flag and comes to an end on the 7th of May. During the festival, the statue of St. George is festooned and decked in gold, decorated and is carried out and placed in the center of the basilica. All prayers and related rituals are conducted in the church during the celebrations of the festival. The Devotees from all parts of the state attend and be a part of the festival. Similar to all other festivals that are celebrated in Kerala, the church grounds are swarmed with vendors and stalls, selling a variety of things ranging from food to utensils to jewelry. In addition to that, there are cultural performances held every evening during the festival.

St. George’s Syro Malabar Forane Church is locally known as Edapally Church. it is a Catholic pilgrimage church situated in Edapally, Kochi in India. It is considered to be Asia's largest shrine to the St. George church and is visited every year by approximately about five million people.

The church is believed to have been founded in the 593 AD. after the seven churches were founded by Thomas the Apostle in the first century AD, this church is regarded as one of the oldest churches in Kerala. Originally the church was dedicated to the Marth Mariam who is also known as the Virgin Mary but in 1080 AD, a new church was built just adjacent to the old church. the Feast of Saint George comprises of a nine-day festival every year as a part of the feast. The church also welcomes the non-Christians and attracts various offerings of gold, chicken, and eggs throughout the year.
