In a recent press conference organized at the Taj Palace Hotel in New Delhi, SriLankan Airlines announced to start 4 additional weekly flights between Delhi and Colombo. This has added 4 flights to currently operating 14 flights on the same route, making a total of 18 flights.

Addressing the media, Vipula Gunatilleka, the CEO of SriLankan Airlines said, “The latest connectivity enhancement comes into effect as a result of the consistent growth in traffic flow from north India. Within a span of four years from 2015 to 2019, the airline has increased frequencies from daily flights to double daily flights, leading to this addition”. He also added that the airline will look forward to operate flights to Calicut and Ahmedabad from Colombo next year onwards. According to the officials, the plan is to increase the capacity by at least 40% over the next five years.

The third non-stop frequency on the route commences on 4 July 2019 departing from Delhi on every Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday at 23:30 hrs and reaching Colombo the following day at 03:00 hrs. The flight route offers consistent connectivity to Melbourne, Singapore, Kuala Lumpur, Bangkok, Jakarta and Gan Island.

Dimuthu Tennakoon, the head of worldwide sales and distribution of SriLankan Airlines said, “Expansion into India is always on the cards. We always consider India as our best-supporting country. After this third frequency flight, we expect more point-to-point traffic and leisure business from India, mainly New Delhi.”

The launch of third frequency flights has added to the weekly flights currently operated by SriLankan Airlines to different cities in India, making a total of 221 flights a week. By far, it is the highest number of flights operated by any country to India.
