It lies in the Satmala and Ajantha hill ranges of the Western Ghats and is administered by the authority of Aurangabad District and Jalgaon District. Established in
1986, the wildlife sanctuary covers a total area of 26,061.19 hectares (64,399 acres) of which 19706 ha of Reserved Forest Areas is in Aurangabad and 6355.19 ha in Jalgaon.
Gautala Autramghat Sanctuary derived its name from the nearby village of Gautala which received its name after Gautam Rishi, a Hindu ascetic whose mention can be found in the Ramcharitmanas.
There is a small cave which is said to be his abode and exists still today. The Sanctuary is 72 km away from the Aurangabad city and there are folk tales that associate this place with prehistoric and early historic religious practices.
Gautala Autramghat Sanctuary has strong summers when the temperature ranges between 37 degrees and 21 degrees Celsius. The summer months remain between the months of March and May. Temperatures fall to a minimum of 10 degree Celsius in the winter season that remains from November and February. Monsoons see extensive rains and stays in the months of June and September. Rainfall varies from 9.0 to 693 mm/month and the average rainfall recorded is 725 mm annually. This is when the vegetation gets a chance to rejuvenate and propagate.
