The district was under the rule of Chera administration until AD 1122 during the Sangam Age, and during this era the region flourished as a major trade center between Kerala and the outside world. However, the city of Kozhikode was distinctly established in the 13th century when the king of Ernad, Udaiyavar conquered the region around Ponniankar and built a fort at Velapuram which is now known as Kozhikode/Calicut. The name has been derived from "calico" which is a fine variety of hand-woven cotton cloth famously found here.
