Beautiful lakes to visit in Sri Lanka
Sri Lanka is a lovely island with abundant natural beauty. Sri Lanka is mostly known for its beaches and oceans; therefore, the country’s lakes may go undetected at times. This blog enlightens on five of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful lakes.
1. Kala Wewa Lake:
The Kala Wewa Lake is Sri Lanka’s largest lake and has a rich history. King Datusena is supposed to have built this lake in the year 307 B.C. The lake has a capacity of 123 million cubic metres and is used for irrigation in the surrounding region.
Another prominent site near the Kala Wewa Lake is a 12-meter-high statue of Lord Buddha. The location of this lake is Anuradhapura.
2. Sembuwatta Lake:
Sembuwatta Lake, one of Sri Lanka’s most beautiful lakes, is a popular tourist destination. This lake is situated inside the village of Elkaduwa in the district named Matale. This man-made creation is built from natural spring water. Along the lake’s edge, there is a natural swimming pool.
The depth of this lake ranges from 9m to 12m. This lake belongs to the Elkaduwa Plantations. Its purpose is to produce electricity for the nearby villages.
3. Gregory Lake:
Gregory Lake is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest lakes. During the British colonialism era in 1873, it was built by British Governor Sir William Gregory. The lake was created with the purpose of supplying electricity. When the lake was formed, the Britishers mostly used it for leisure.
The Sri Lankan government has recently given the lake, as well as the highland area of Nuwara Eliya, a facelift. With these modifications, Gregory Lake has been transformed into a lake park where visitors may partake in a variety of leisure activities such as boat rides, pony rides along the beach, swan-shaped paddle boats and watersports such as windsurfing and jet skiing.
4. Kandy Lake:
It is also known as Kiri Muhuda or the Sea of Milk and is a lovely man-made lake. King Sri Wickrama Rajasinghe constructed the lake near the Temple of the Tooth in 1807.
The lake has shrunk in size over time, and it is now protected. This is the reason why fishing in this lake is prohibited. At this place, you will see a beautiful view of town and hills around.
5. Beira Lake:
The Beira Lake, located near the developed capital city of Colombo, is one of Sri Lanka’s most recognised landmarks. The Beira Lake used to be around 410 hectares in size, but it has now been reduced to 160 acres due to the new development procedures.
On this lake, you may go boating and enjoy running and jogging on the track that surrounds the lake.
6. Bolgoda Lake:
Bolgoda Lake is Sri Lanka’s largest natural lake. The lake encompasses two-thirds of the Kalutara district and is also a significant part of Dehiwala-Mount Lavinia, a Colombo suburb. In the past, the lake was used for the transportation of commodities and people from the Kalu Ganga’s upper stream.
During the colonial era, it was used as a hunting place for Britishers. While you’re at the lake, participate in a variety of water sports such as yachting, sailing, kayaking, canoeing, water skiing and jet skiing.
