Udaipur – An oasis in middle of desert

There is no doubt if we recommend Udaipur city as an oasis in the desert because it is only the city who has around 8 lakes between desert cities like Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Mandawa etc, so it seems like a lifeline for the people of Rajasthan.

I visited this charming city in March 2018 again, earlier I came here in 2016 where I visited their major attractions like other tourists so this time i had no idea what else can be visited so hotel staff offered me a car for visiting the hidden beauty of Udaipur that is Lakes of Udaipur.

Next day my journey started with lakes of Udaipur where I visited Lake Pichola, Udai Sagar Lake, Fateh Sagar Lake, Rajsamand Lake and Jaisamand Lake are the five well known lakes of Udaipur including Lake Pichola. Lakes like Doodh Talai, Badi Ka Talab and Kumharia Talab are also other small lakes that form the part of watercourses in Udaipur that is why Udaipur is called an oasis in the desert.

Pichola Lake

Pichola Lake is one of the most beautiful and oldest lake of Rajasthan. Also it is the largest lake of Udaipur. This beautiful lake was built by Pichhu Banjara during the ruling period of Maharana Lakha in 1362.

Fateh Sagar Lake

This Lake is the second artificial lake of Udaipur, the first being Jaisamand Lake. It was built by Maharana Jai Singh in 1678, Maharana Fateh Singh gave his name to this lake, who later made additions to it.

Jaisamand Lake

Lake Jaisamand is known as the second largest man-made lake in Asia. It is located about 48 kms from the city of Udaipur, also known as Dhebar. Maharana Jai Singh built this lake in 1685 while making a dam on the Gomti River..

Rajsamand Lake

Rajsamand Lake is also a very popular lake of Udaipur. It is 66kms away and lies in the north of Udaipur, The lake is also called as Rajsamudra Lake in Rajasthan. It was built by Maharana Raj Singh in 1660..

Udai Sagar Lake

Udaisagar Lake is located 13 km east of Udaipur. In 1559 the construction was started by Maharana Udai Singh and got completed in 1565.

Dudh/ Doodh Talai

It is a small lake that lies in the south-east direction of Pichola Lake. Doodh Talai contributes its water to Lake Pichola. This water adds to the picturesque triangle to Pichola on one side, Doodh Talai on the second and M.L. Verma Garden on the third.

Jiyan Sagar (Badi Ka Talab)

Jiyan Sagar is another lake of Udaipur which is located in the village of Badi. It was built by Maharana Raj Singh, Jiyan Sagar was built to deal with the problem of famine in the area. The lake got the name after Jana Devi who was the mother of Raj Singh.

Swaroop Sagar (Kumharia Talab)

Swaroop Sagar is a small and artificial lake in Udaipur, it was created and got name by Maharana Swaroop Singh. It is also called Kumharia Talab, situated behind the famous Jagdish Temple, The lake was actually built to provide water to the people of Udaipur. It connects with Lake Pichola and Fateh Sagar.

I must say that everyone coming to Udaipur must visit these lakes, if you want to see the real and hidden beauty of Udaipur.
